Seniors Hurling

Drom & Inch      3-15

Portroe              0-10

Drom & Inch seniors had an excellent 3-15 to 10 point victory over Portroe in the 1st round of the county senior hurling championship. In windy conditions in Dolla last Saturday, our seniors battled hard against the wind in the first half to lead 1-7 to 8 points at half time. An outstanding solo goal effort from Mikey Connors in the 7th minute set up Drom nicely going forward. David Collins hit 3 points from play in the opening half, along with corner forward Stevie Nolan, were in top form.

Drom exploded into life early in the 2nd half when Michéal Butler gained possession in space in what looked to be a handy point opportunity, charged forward and fired a rocket off his left into the bottom corner leaving Darren Gleeson with no chance. Two minutes later, half time substitute Tommy Nolan, got on the end of a David Collins hand pass and manufactured a stunning goal when a point seemed to be on offer.

Drom & Inch were defensively sound throughout this contest and only conceded two points in the 2nd half. Portroe did threaten for a goal in the closing stages but were denied by the brilliant efforts of goal keeper, Damien Young.

They next play Clonoulty/Rossmore in round 2 on the weekend of the 28/29th of May which promises to be an explosive encounter as Clonoulty are being coached by former Drom trainer, Sean Prendergast.

Intermediate Hurling

Drom & Inch      1-14

Moneygall          1-14

Our Intermediates had a hard fought draw with Moneygall in the 1st round of the county championship. In wet and cold conditions in Templemore, Drom were chasing this match from early on as Moneygall found the net in the opening minutes. Twice, the Drom & Inch men found themselves down by 7 points but managed to claw it back each time. Drom trailed by 4 points at half time playing against the breeze.

However, this intermediate team, like so many times before, never gave up hope and continued to battle on. They were rewarded at the death when a long range free delivered into the heart of the Moneygall defence by centre back Enda Walsh resulted in a melee in the large square, the ball was somehow bundled over the line by Jerome Ryan to tie up the match.

They next play Roscrea in round 2 of the championship which is effectively a knock out game as there are only 3 teams in the group.

Drom & Inch also saw the return of expat, Donnacha Kennedy after a five year absence in the green jersey who lined out at full back. Donnacha is commuting from Birmingham to train with Drom and rolled back the years with a fine display from the square.
