Well done to Shane Hassett who was part of the University of Limerick Intermediate side who defeated UCC in the Munster final played in UL last Tuesday. We wish Shane and UL well in the All Ireland series. Also we wish Shane well in the Fitzgibbon Cup semi finals when they play UCD this coming weekend.

Munster Intermediate Hurling Final Report

By Marisa Kennedy

Tuesday 23rd February, North Campus

UL 1-15 UCC 0-15

UL were crowned Intermediate Munster Hurling champions in dramatic fashion on Tuesday on North Campus. The home side found themselves trailing by two with just over five minutes to go before a spectacular comeback saw them score 1-2 without reply just before the death.
It looked to be going all UCC’s way in the first half as it took 22 minutes for UL to register their first score from play. The full back line struggled to cope with the UCC forwards and they began picking off points before Conan Fitzgerald was forced to produce a save.
Shane Hassett kept UL in touch, scoring five frees in the first half but UL were unable to reduce the deficit below two points. Alan Murphy and Kevin Bergin added scores for UL who trailed UCC by three points at half-time.
UL were much livelier in the second half, Hassett and Murphy along with Jacob Loughnane registering crucial scores early on. UL missed a goal chance and minutes later Fitzgerald was again called into action when a UCC free caused havoc inside the square.
In the 40th minute, UL levelled the game through a well taken Loughnane point. That was quickly followed by a point from midfielder, Donal O’Dwyer. Another Hassett free, followed by a UCC point left just one between the sides when the referee signalled for a UCC penalty.
Again Fitzgerald pulled off another great save but UCC scored the next three points in quick succession with minutes to go.
UL didn’t panic and Pa Sheehan popped the sliotar over the bar before Alan Murphy added another magnificent point.
The hosts bombarded the UCC square with long balls in and with seconds remaining of normal time, it paid off, Jacob Loughnane pouncing on the ball and driving it past the UCC goalkeeper.
The UL backs then worked equally as hard to ensure UCC were unable to find any redeeming score before the final whistle.
The captain, Martin Glynn accepted the Munster trophy for the team who now march on to an All Ireland Final with their oppenents to be decided next week.
Congratulations to all involved!

UL SCORERS: Shane Hassett 0-7 (5f), Jacob Loughnane 1-2, Alan Murphy 0-3, Donal O’Dwyer, Pa Sheehan, Kevin Bergin 0-1 each.
